"Go
Green!" "Go White!"
All throughout the campus on gameday, Spartan fans see-saw this chant back
and forth. The echoes converge on Spartan Stadium where one half of
the arena blasts "Go Green!" while the other responds with "Go White!"
The cheer is simple, but piercing and at times, intimidating. Spartan
Stadium is a tall structure set amongst the beautiful campus in East
Lansing. For the most part, the green clad fans are gracious and
modest. Even if you come across some that are less welcoming, they
quickly become allies when profanities directed at their hated rival,
Michigan, are volunteered. It's an effective way to make friends in
the area. Autumn in the state of Michigan is extraordinarily colorful
and it makes for a classic college setting. The stadium is equipped
with a complete bowl for the lower deck and two upper decks that leave the
ends open to views of the campus and the picturesque Red Cedar River.
The Spartan band is powerful and makes a grand entrance. However, the
repetitive playing of their fight song can be overwhelming. I know
when I left East Lansing, I had "FIGHT! FIGHT! RAH! TEAM! FIGHT! Victory for
MSU!" lodged in my brain. As with most college campuses, the fuel for
this excessive exuberance is found in the cans of ales and lagers.
Their campus wide permissiveness to open containers recently underwent rule
changes that confine consumption of extracurricular liquids to more remote
locations. However, kids will be kids and sneak their illegalities in
a variety of fashions. Evidence of this rests on my car decorated with
Wisconsin paraphernalia. Apparently, my loyalty to the Badgers cost me
a cracked windshield. Nevertheless, I leave East Lansing proud of
their intense Big Ten atmosphere. You can feel the stadium saturated with
history and tradition along with a undying faithfulness to the green and
white.
