This is a classic example of a place with nothing else to do except enjoy Hawkeye sports.  Television announcers usually claim that “you can leave the keys in your tractor” because everyone in Iowa is at the game.  Pre-game tailgating is fantastic and the buzz on the streets in Iowa City is all about the team.  Many fans point out visiting colors and start their battle cries and chants.  Walking up to Kinnick Stadium, you see a beautiful brick façade that lines the outside.  The stadium itself is in four large sections pieced together.  There is not much to view from the stadium other than a water tower peeks over the edge of one wall.  Fans are devoted here.  Whether they are playing Michigan or Southeastern South Dakota’s Convent for the Blind, Iowa fans show up in full force covered in black and gold and ready to support their team.  The band revs up the crowd while Herky Hawkeye causes trouble on the sidelines.  A key tradition surrounding Iowa football is their famed entrance onto the field.  Iowa players all hold hands and slowly slither onto the field.  This is known as the Swarm and it certainly is an attention grabber.  Moreover, it symbolizes the unity of Iowa football and their fans.  I felt as though I did not get the full effect of the atmosphere the day I went because Wisconsin blanked the Hawks 31-0.  You have to expect a somber crowd with that kind of result.  Yet, I still saw the enthusiasm.  Walking past the student section, I received some good heckling – a few cups were tossed my way.  Maybe waving my big red cowboy hat in front of them was not such a good idea!  As far as beautiful stadiums, this is not anywhere near the top ten.  However, in devotion, atmosphere, and excitement, it moves toward the top.
