Central
Iowa is a haven for harvested corn and pure nothingness. The
surroundings along the twenty mile drive north of Des Moines offer no
suggestion that college campus life lies just ahead. When cutting off
toward Iowa State, it isn't long before a stadium jumps into view. The
campus is a few football tosses away. Lincoln Way is the main drag
with the Campus Bookstore and several quaint hangouts. On gameday,
lots are full and tailgating is in full force right from the highway exit.
The party starts early as a flurry of activity permeates the perimeter of
Jack Trice Stadium. As with most stadiums, fans occupy themselves with
the purchase of Cyclone paraphernalia, tossing footballs, and grilling out.
All activity ceases once the ISU band marches into the stadium. The
cue is taken and fans wrap up their pregame rituals and march into the
arena. Jack Trice Stadium is built into a hill and on all four corners
where the stadium is not enclosed, fans lay out blankets and soak in the
action. The Cyclone band spells out "ISU" and "CYCLONES" as the fans
scream "Cyclone Power!" from the stands. The team pours onto the field
through a large inflatable helmet. The facemask serves as the gates
and the team barrels through to the sound of a canon and the ISU fight song.
All of these rituals are common to most stadiums and Iowa State performs
their routine very well. The fans are loyal and love their Cyclones.
By contrast, the hate for their rival Iowa pops up all over campus.
There is passion here despite the recent struggles that the team has faced.
Red and yellow is proudly worn. Although it's not the most powerful
venue in the nation, Iowa State holds an atmosphere that adds color and
pageantry to the college football landscape.
