Game two:
|
September 13, 2008 The Boilers were not quite out in full force this weekend. A decent crowd showed up, but there were some empty seats - uncharacteristic for Purdue. Duck fans from Oregon made a nice percentage of the day’s attendance. They came blowing their duck kazoo noisemakers and wearing shirts like, “Hooked on Quack.” What can I say? I’m a little disappointed in Purdue…and I’m not talking about the outcome of the game. It’s not that there wasn’t any enthusiasm at all, but an early Boiler lead followed by an Oregon comeback created such a sedate crowd, there were moments where I thought I was at a narcolepsy convention… The game did not lack incredible plays. The second play let those who decided to pay this game a visit know that it would be a battle. An eighty yard touchdown dart by Kory Sheets in the game’s second play sent the crowd into a frenzy. As Purdue grabbed what seemed like a comfortable lead, the fans grew a little comfortable, too. Oregon found themselves behind and looking anemic during most of the game. But, by the second half, they began to wear their #16 ranking well and a punt return for a TD helped them storm back and send the contest into overtime. They found their offense just in time and escaped with a 32-26 double overtime thriller. I’m not trying to rip too hard into Purdue. I love coming to West Lafayette to watch Big Ten clashes and have had some of my most exciting experiences at Ross-Ade Stadium. This is why I am disappointed. This was one of the day’s biggest games on ABC and it just lacked the fan firepower. Perhaps it was the 90 degree heat or maybe expectations at Purdue are beginning to sink. They haven’t beaten a ranked team since 2003. No disrespect to Joe Tiller, but I’m sure most Purdue faithful would agree that the football program needs a good swift kick in the tight end. Wake up, Boilers…there is a long season ahead – and duck season just flew past you. Oregon defeats Purdue on this TD in double overtime.
